Niobrara County Cattlewomen's Scholarship

 

There are four scholarships available:

 

Two scholarships open to anyone pursuing an agricultural field of study in the amount of $350.00, payable at the successful completion of the first semester with at least a 2.5 GPA and enrollment for the second semester or in the case of a continuing college student a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  You must be a full time college student with at least 12 credit hours both semesters.

 

Two scholarships to a member of an agriculture family who has a major other than agriculture in the amount of $350.00, payable at the successful completion of the first semester with at least a 2.5 GPA and enrollment for the second semester or in the case of a continuing college student a GPA of 2.5 or higher.  You must be a full time college student with at least 12 credit hours both semesters.

Niobrara County Homemakers Council Scholarship

There are two scholarships available for $500.00 each from two of the three following categories.

• A scholarship available to anyone pursuing any college or trade school degree. 

• The traditional student-must be pursuing full time study in any college or trade school, must be within 4 years of high school graduation and have graduated high school with a 2.5 cumulative GPA. 

• The non-traditional student must be returning to school more than 4 years past high school graduation, and may be pursuing any college course of study or trade school, taking six or more credit hours.

Lolly Lohr Memorial Scholarship

The intent of the donors of the Lolly Lohr Memorial Scholarship is to recognize and pay tribute to a woman who, by leading a very ordinary life built on love and strong family values, was able to achieve that which was quite extraordinary.  It is our belief that Lolly set a shining example of how humanity is supposed to care, love and live together.  Our only fear is that we may not have the strength to live as she did and follow the example that she set.  Lolly showed us, by her actions, that we too can move mountains if only one pebble at a time.  We are a privileged few that felt her warmth and compassion.  We are truly blessed.

 

Born as Laural Louise Hughes and nicknamed Lolly, she was a young child from Hartville when her family was afflicted with polio.  Two brothers were lost to the disease and a third was left with a constant reminder of its toil.  Lolly also contracted polio but it had little effect on her; perhaps for reasons that would not be revealed until later in life.  Her duty as a young child was to assist with the family chores and day to day living.  Lolly graduated from Niobrara County High School in 1958.  Later that year, she married John Lohr and stood by his side for 44 years; excepting two years spent at the side of their eldest daughter Glennis.  As loving and caring parents, John and Lolly made the decision that Lolly would care for Glennis at her home in Gering, NE as she fought for her life against cancer.  She and Glennis fought cancer together until Glennis’ death in 2001and proved that, though cancer can take the body it cannot conquer the spirit.

 

Lolly spent much of her time helping John with ranching, custom haying, raising sheep and operating the trucking business they established throughout their married life.  Many have said, where you found one, you found the other.  It is through her travels and casual conversation that she touched the lives of hundreds of people in the small communities that surround Lusk, Wyoming.

 

This scholarship is attributable to the people who make up the community of Lusk, Wyoming and those that surround it, along with all that knew Lolly Lohr.  The enormous support of family and friends that followed in the days and weeks after Lolly’s tragic death are what prompted us to establish the Lolly Lohr Memorial Scholarship.  It is a means for us, in some small way, to continue her legacy of love and commitment to strong family values by offering a $750.00 scholarship to a qualifying senior of Niobrara County High School each year in her memory.  May the recipient know that someone is always there to help you along in life and that living is about families, friends and communities that care for one another.

 

Preferences: Priority for selection shall be given to those individuals who rank below the top 10% of the class who intend to pursue additional education beyond the high school level. This includes vocational and technical training as well as higher academic education.
